Driving costs up 1.9 cents a mile

The cost of operating a typical sedan car rose in the past year by 1.9 cents per mile to 59.6 cents per mile, according to a AAA study released Friday. For those driving an average of 15,000 miles a year, AAA estimates the average cost of owning and operating a sedan is $8,946 a year. John Nielsen, AAA director of automotive engineering and repair, said most of the increase stems from the 14.8 percent increase in fuel costs from 2011 to 2012.

In-depth findings of this year's study are contained in the "Your Driving Costs" brochure that is available at select local AAA branch offices.
