Business Briefs: Signal Mountain eatery closes

Signal Mountain eatery closes

After 13 months, the owners of the Southern Star restaurant closed their Seventeen Ninety restaurant atop Signal Mountain on Wednesday night.

"We just weren't doing the sales that we needed to do," said Nancy Adams, who owned and operated the 90-seat, upscale eatery. "Friday and Saturdays were good, but during the week there just wasn't enough to keep it going."

The restaurant closing will cost about 10 jobs, but Adams said she hopes some of the displaced workers will be able to shift to the Southern Star restaurant downtown or the take-out business that is staying open on the mountain.

Eiselstein to plan for BlueCross

Michael Eiselstein will lead BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee's planning for the health insurance exchange being created in Tennessee under the health care reform law.

Beginning 2014, the exchange will allow individuals to compare health insurance options and purchase coverage online. Eiselstein, a 13-year employee at BlueCross, will oversee development of such products for BlueCross.

"With the anticipated establishment of a state or federal insurance exchange and other reforms, individual products will play an even greater role as many people gain access to coverage in this new marketplace," said Henry Smith, a BlueCross senior vice president.
