• Name: New Culinary Institute of Virginia College

• Location: 5707 Marlin Road

• Status: The project is about 10 percent complete. Workers are moving the existing massage therapy classrooms to another part of the building. Crews also are installing plumbing in the concrete slab and getting ready to start framing walls.

• Price: $800,000 for a 5,400-square-foot renovation. The entire building measures 44,267 square feet.

• Features: The new culinary institute will include two kitchens, one bakery kitchen, one lecture classroom, two walk-in coolers and a walk-in freezer. As part of the project, workers are rerunning two new HVAC units, new wiring, new plumbing and new kitchen equipment like hoods and exhaust fans. There will be lockers for students, and card readers will control access.

• Materials: Walls consist of steel stud framing with gypsum board sheathing. Hollow wood doors with metal frames allow student flow between rooms. Other features include acoustic ceilings, fluorescent lighting, carpet tiles, vinyl and ceramic tiles and plastic laminate cases.

• Contractor: Nick Cornelison of P&C Construction Inc.
