Sierra Club, TVA tussle over coal plant plans

The Tennessee Valley Authority is accepting public input on $1 billion worth of pollution controls it plans for its coal-fired power plant in Gallatin, Tenn.

But the Sierra Club, which argues TVA should instead invest in energy efficiency programs, is calling for a longer comment period, public hearings and more documentation from the utility.

"The TVA has a responsibility to evaluate the full public health, environmental and customer costs of this expensive decision," Gallatin resident and Sierra Club member Michelle Haynes said in a prepared statement. "We have a right to information about this dirty plant in our backyard."
