Gas prices up but less locally

The average price of a gallon of gasoline Monday in Chattanooga was up nearly 6 cents per gallon from a week ago and was 9 cents per gallon above the year-ago level. But the $3.23 per gallon price of a gallon of fuel in Chattanooga on Monday was still more than 40 cents per gallon below the U.S. average, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Survey.

Gas prices have been below year-ago levels for most of the past year. But AAA surveys of service stations showed gas prices in the United States rose last week above the year-ago level for the first time in 2013, reflecting increased demand from the improving economy.

FedEx raises freight rates

FedEx Corp. will raise its basic freight rates by 4.5 percent beginning July 1.

The move announced Monday follows Jan. 7 rate increases in the FedEx Express air shipment business and FedEx Ground package shipping business.

FedEx said Monday that its freight fuel surcharges are not changing, and remain among the lowest in the industry.
