Cambridge Square celebrates opening

Barrier Properties, developer of Cambridge Square in Ooltewah, will host an open house weekend May 17-18 with live music, local food, and children's activities to mark the opening of the new office and retail complex.

Cambridge Square is being developed as an upscale mixed-use community located on 130 acres at the corner of Ooltewah/Georgetown Road and Lee Highway near the entrance to the Honors Golf Course.

Development activity began at Cambridge Square in the fall of 2011 and the first phase will be celebrated on Friday with events at the development's signature public square, which features staging for outdoor performances. Ooltewah native Barry Payne has served as the general contractor with River Street Architecture providing lead design services.

"This has been a long-time coming," said Barrier Property principal and Lupton Company CEO David Belitz said in a statement Friday. "We have spent a lot of energy planning Cambridge Square, and to have reached a point where we are announcing tenants and hosting the extended Ooltewah community is very rewarding for our entire development team."

The open house weekend, which is free and open to the public, will kick-off on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. with live bluegrass music from Chattanooga's Slim Pickins. Cambridge Square restaurant tenants Southern Burger Co. and Lupi's Pizza Pies will be on hand selling their fare.

On Saturday, the public is invited back to participate in kids' activities and tours of the property. Visitors can expect more live music with special guest the River City Red Hots, as well as activities that include canvas painting, face painting, and balloon art.

Current tenants at Cambridge Square include Independent Healthcare Properties, Southern Burger Co., and Lupi's Pizza Pies. Tedford Family Dentistry is slated to begin construction of a medical office in late 2013.

The development team also has letters of intent for a 6,000 square-foot locally-owned Chattanooga restaurant concept; a 2,500 square-foot locally owned yoga concept, and more than 25,000 square feet in medical and professional office.

"We have reached a visual crossroads, where people no longer have to imagine the concept for the community," said Michael McGowan, a partner with River Street Architecture. "As buildings go vertical and landscape architecture takes shape, we think people will really begin to appreciate the level of detail and planning that went into this development."
