Market Street' Blacksmith's Bistro & Bar closing

Blacksmith's Bistro & Bar is closing on Market Street in downtown Chattanooga after less than a year at the site, according to the business.

The venture opened about five years ago in St. Elmo and shifted in March to the 809 Market St. location. Friday was the last day there, a spokeswoman for the business said.

The restaurant opened downtown after the earlier closure of the Market Street Tavern. Blacksmith's menu ranged from main-dish salads, burgers, sandwiches and heartier entrees.

Volkswagen plant expanding

Volkswagen has begun site work on the expansion to its assembly shop parts warehouse in Chattanooga, but it's unrelated to any possible production of a sport utility vehicle, according to VW.

On Friday, heavy equipment was at the site and stakes were in the ground marking the $17.7 million project that will add nearly 200,000 square feet.

By extending the warehouse building in the assembly shop, the automaker said it will eliminate the need for two current external staging warehouses.

VW makes the Passat midsize sedan in Chattanooga, and an official has called the Chattanooga plant the front runner for production of an all-new, seven-seat SUV for the United States. A production decision between Chattanooga and Mexico is expected to be announced soon.
