UAW members to elect officers

The United Auto Workers local in Chattanooga plans to elect officers in about a month for the unit trying to organize workers at Volkswagen's assembly plant. The planned vote follows selection of a 13-person election committee this week for Local 42.

"Training for the election committee will happen within two weeks, followed by the election of officers approximately four weeks out," said UAW Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel.

Casteel has said the local has signed up "substantially more" than 670 members, which would have been enough to have won a February election at the plant. The UAW lost that vote 712 to 626. In June, the UAW set up the non-dues-paying local with hopes that VW will recognize it if enough workers sign up.

Anti-UAW plant workers are conducting an effort to get employees to revoke authorization for UAW representation and support a decertification election should VW recognize the union.

World of Beer opens Friday

Chattanooga's World of Beer tavern will open next Friday in the former Qdoba's restuarant site at 412 Market St.

The Chattanooga location is World of Beer Inc.'s first Tennessee tavern. It will serve up "one of the world's most extensive craft beer collections," with over 500 bottled beers and 60 rotating brews on tap. "Tavern fare" food options will also be available.
