Food City plans to hire 40 more employees at its Red Bank supermarket, which is one of the first of 29 Bi-Lo stores that the Abingdon, Va.-based grocer is rebranding in the Chattanooga area.

John Jones, Food City's executive vice president, said today that it will ramp up the service component at the store. Also, the company expects to drive more sales volume at its stores than did Bi-Lo with lower prices and will need more people, he said.

Already, Food City has hired nearly all of the 2,000 former employees of Bi-Lo, officials said.

The grocer, which is owned by K-VA-T Food Stores Inc., plans to reopen the Red Bank and Harrison stores on Wednesday as Food City units.

The Hixson Pike store in Rivermont and another at 8530 Hixson Pike will debut a day later.

The other stores are expected to close a few days over the next month or so on a scheduled basis and then reopen as Food City units.

Food City bought the 29 Bi-Lo stores in late July.
