FedEx Ground, the small-package ground delivery unit of Memphis-based FedEx Corp., is looking at putting another facility in Chattanooga.

"This is something that's proposed," FedEx Ground spokesman Jesse Bull said Friday.

Bull said he didn't have a time frame about when a final decision will be made about such a project and wouldn't share details.

But FedEx said it continues to evaluate the need for additional facilities and is continuously in talks with government officials. The company said it doesn't discuss specifics of a project until all the details have been finalized.

"It's not a definite project," Bull said.

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke said he doesn't comment on projects in which there may be ongoing discussions.

But he said that he "loves to have quality, national companies invest in our city."

FedEx Ground has a distribution facility it built in 2008 off Alton Park Boulevard. The $15 million, 163,000-square-foot facility is located on a former Wheland Foundry site.

FedEx also has a location at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.

After Amazon built two distribution centers, one in Chattanooga and another in Charleston, Tenn., and Volkswagen opened its assembly plant at Enterprise South industrial park, air freight soared at the airport.

Airport officials expanded a cargo ramp on the south end of its main runway to accommodate FedEx, spending more than $2.3 million.

FedEx went from two smaller planes to a Boeing 727, with an official saying that the next plane up would be a 757, which carries a bigger payload.
