Unemployment in Tennessee rose in January to 6.7 percent, a full 1 percentage points above the U.S. jobless rate for the month.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development said today the state's jobless rate at the start of 2015 matched the same time a year ago.

Employment in Tennessee did rise by 71,700 jobs over the past year, however, including a seasonally adjusted 8,300-job gain from December to January. The unemployment rate did not change because of the increase in the number of Tennesseans looking for work in the past year.
