Chattanooga jobless rate falls to 7-year low

Unemployment in metropolitan Chattanooga fell last month to the lowest monthly level since April 2008.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported Wednesday that the jobless rate in the six-county Chattanooga area fell by three tenths of a percent to 5.3 percent - the lowest in about seven years.

Among Tennessee's major metro areas, unemployment was lowest in Nashville last month at 4.4 percent and highest in Memphis at 6.3 percent.

Davidson County had the state's lowest major metropolitan rate in October at 4.2 percent, down from September's rate of 4.6 percent.

Knox County was 4.4 percent in October, down from 4.8 the previous month. The Hamilton County October rate was 5.1 percent, down from 5.6 in September. Shelby County was 6.4 percent in October, down from 6.7 percent the previous month.

Tennessee's preliminary unemployment rate for October was 5.6 percent, down one tenth of a percentage point from from the previous month. The U.S. preliminary rate for October was 5 percent, also down one tenth of a percentage point from September.
