The state's top economic developer said today he plans to be the first buyer of the sport utility vehicle that Volkswagen plans to make in Chattanooga.

Randy Boyd, the state's commissioner of economic and community development, said he planned to put down a deposit at Village Volkswagen in Chattanooga to buy the SUV this afternoon.

"I came up with the idea one day randomly," he said. The SUV's production is slated to start in Chattanooga in late 2016.

Boyd made the comment during a state Senate hearing in Chattanooga related to VW's expansion plans and the incentives which Tennessee, the city and Hamilton County having provided.
