Volkswagen of America today reported that August sales dropped 8.1 percent, with the Chattanooga-made Passat falling more than 19 percent from a year ago.

Total August sales for VW were 32,332 vehicles, off from 35,181 last year. Passat sales totaled 7,409, down from 9,109 in August 2014, the company reported.

Sales of VW's all-new Golf family of vehicles were 7,075 units, an 86.2 percent increase over the prior August.

Also, Tiguan sport utility vehicle sales were 3,165 units, which is 47.1 percent higher.

"We are encouraged by the continued strength of the Golf family and confident that success will continue with the model year 2016 vehicles," said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer of Volkswagen of America.
