The average price of gas in Chattanooga edged above $2 a gallon this week for the first time in nearly two months, but local prices at the pump still averaged 26 cents less than the U.S. average, the online gas price tracking service GasBuddy.com said today.

Average retail gasoline prices in Chattanooga rose 2.2 cents per gallon over the past week to $2.02 on Monday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.28 per gallon.

Chattanooga gas prices average 32.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 16.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. But prices at the pump are still 4 cents lower than two years ago and are more than a dollar a gallon below the prices at the end of the year in 2011-2013.

"While the benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude closed last week near $53 per barrel, it's doubtful that we'll see any momentum this week since trading is generally low volume between Christmas and New Year's Day. Similarly, expect the aggressive escalation that we saw for retail gasoline prices through much of December to stall out in the final week of the year," said Gregg Laskoski, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.
