GE Power cutting 145 Knoxville jobs

GE Power, which announced plans Tuesday to eliminate 235 jobs at its Chattanooga manufacturing facilities, also will cut about 145 jobs in Knoxville.

The company said Wednesday it's phasing out 85 jobs from its Environmental Control Systems operation, starting in August, leaving about 60 posts.

Also, some 60 jobs from GE Power's Shared Service Center in Knoxville will be transferred to Cincinnati, according to the company. The majority of the transfers will take place by year-end.

While involving a separate business unit from GE Power's Chattanooga operation, the Knoxville moves also are part of the integration of GE with the Alstom facilities it acquired.

"Based on the current competitive marketplace, the challenges the power industry continues to face GE continues to review its operations, organizational structure, products and services to support its growth strategy and meet the needs of its customers," GE Power said in a statement. "These actions are difficult, but necessary to ensure the long-term competitiveness of our business."

The company said it will provide benefits to assist displaced employees and try to assist displaced workers find other jobs within GE, where available.
