Volkswagen of America has released the first installment of a video series on the new Chattanooga-made sport utility vehicle slated to be unveiled Thursday in California.

Called "Origins," the 8-part series will explore the SUV from concept to creation, according to the automaker.

Hinrich J. Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen's North America Region, said on the video that VW has been known as a small car company. But the seven-seat SUV will give the company broad coverage which it has not had before, he said.

VW's Chattanooga plant will begin production on the vehicle, believed to be called the Atlas, later this year. It will hit dealerships early in 2017, according to the car company.
