Hot towel service, facial massages and straight-razor shaves for men. Shampoo beds for women and men that recline to a horizontal position "whilst clients enjoy indulgent head massages." A complimentary cup of English tea or glass of beer or Italian sparkling wine.

Those are some of the perks advertised at EV1 Barbershop & Salon, a new business at 1301 Cowart St. near Urban Stack restaurant in the trendy Southside neighborhood that promises to introduce Chattanoogans to the "English style of precision hair-cutting, colouring and barbering."

EV1 is owned by Lisa Stephenson Jones, who started her career more than 25 years ago in the United Kingdom - first in Manchester, then Scotland and finally London - working with the Vidal Sassoon brand.

"EV1 Barbershop & Salon has been a dream of mine for years. Clients will enjoy the quintessential, English salon experience - a nod to my upbringing - while noticing touches of Chattanooga charm, my new home," Jones said. "By opening a salon downtown, we hope to connect with the style renaissance that's clearly happening in this city and complement it with effortlessly crafted hair."

Jones previously served as a Sassoon Academy educator where she taught thousands of hair professionals over the years. After moving stateside, she held the creative director position for Sassoon Salon Atlanta and Sassoon Salon New York Uptown (at the time, the brand's U.S. flagship).

Then she worked at Brooklyn's Ludlow Blunt, an English-style barbershop that's been the backdrop for movies and TV shows, such as the Prohibition-era HBO drama "Boardwalk Empire," before moving to Chattanooga.

"We just wanted to bring a little piece of that to the Southside," said Jones, who wound up in Chattanooga because her husband, Todd Jones, is from Dalton.

"We got married and had a baby," she said. The couple have a 14-month-old daughter, Evelyn Rose Jones.

EV1's reception space, with woodwork done by local contractor Mark Ackers of MT Constructors, is meant to be reminiscent of a Swedish lodge.

It features a handcrafted, wooden reception desk paired with leather stools, which doubles as a spot to sip a drink or catch up on emails; light sheepskin and cowhide rugs and metallic shelving to house a product display. EV1 is the first salon in Chattanooga to offer the Kerastase line of hair products, Jones said.

The front section has a barbershop, has two traditional barber chairs, a 7-foot mirror with ornate, antique finishes and custom cabinetry.

The back half of the salon has concrete countertop stations and 6-foot mirrors to accentuate the natural light and windows. Shampoo beds recline to a total horizontal position.

One feature Jones is working on is turning a room off the main salon into a play area for young children.

"It's so hard to get your hair done when you're a mom - a new mom, especially," she said.

Brittany Holmes, a Vogue-approved master barber, works with Jones at EV1. Holmes has been featured in Vogue for her straight razor skills and has trained aspiring barbers from around the world wanting to learn how to straight razor shave.

EV1 isn't the only new Southside salon-barbershop. Shaves for men also are offered at the unisex All City Barber Co. at 20 W. 20th St. next to Sterchi Construction just off Market Street that 24-year-old Kristin Gonzalez opened last year.
