Jimmy Sills applies for a job during a job fair with Volkswagen staffing contractor Aerotek held at the Volkswagen Manufacturing Plant on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, in Chattanooga, Tenn. Aerotek is hiring to fill production slots for manufacturing Volkswagen's new Atlas SUV.

Volkswagen contract hiring firm Aerotek said that it has upped the average starting pay for plant production workers to $14.50 per hour as it tries to hire 400 more people.

In December, Aerotek said that starting pay was $13.50 per hour.

Raising the starting pay gives workers the potential to make an average of $17 per hour after one year of employment, according to Aerotek.

Aerotek has been hiring hundreds of production workers over the past few months to work on the new Atlas sport utility vehicle.

"This has been a hugely successful hiring initiative, allowing Aerotek to bring more than 1,000 jobs to the local community," said Aerotek spokesman Lucas Hiler in a statement.

Job requirements include the ability to accommodate rotating shifts, including overtime, and perform repetitive bending, squatting and twisting, according to the company.

Interested candidates should call the local Aerotek office for more information at 423-242-2620, or go online at www.aerotektn.com to apply.
