The state where women earn the biggest share of pay, compared with the average for their male counterparts, are:

1. New York, where women earn an average of 89 percent of men's pay

2. California, where women earn an average of 88 percent of men's pay

3. Florida, where women earn an average of 87 percent of men's pay

4. Vermont, where women earn an average of 86 percent of men's pay

5. Colorado, where women earn an average of 84 percent of men's pay

Source: American Association of University Women. In Tennessee and Georgia, women averaged 82 percent of the pay of men, placing Tennessee as the 14th best state and Georgia as the 18th highest state for gender pay equality.
