Under Construction: Walking above Chattanooga streets

photo David Taylor, Strauss Company project superintendent for the Liberty Tower project, works on a new pedway over East Sixth Street.

Name: Liberty Tower Pedestrian Walkway

Location: Corner of Sixth and Chestnut streets

Status: Workers have completed major work on Liberty Tower's new pedestrian walkway, said Clay Whitfield, project manager. The walkway will be finalized by the beginning of 2013. Much of the concrete and steel is installed. Workers still need to install electrical equipment, install a roof, brush and stain the concrete floor and add the interior finishes.

Price: More than $500,000

Features: The walkway will connect the Republic Center garage to the third floor of Liberty Tower. When complete, the covered walkway will include lighting, security and computer-controlled access. Any authorized person with a smartphone will have the ability to unlock a door, for instance.

How big: The walkway is 120 feet long, three stories high and includes more than 47 tons of steel, Whitfield said.

What will it look like: Owner Jim Berry is calling the interior finish "subdued elegance," an upscale but not opulent decorating style.

Key facts: The walkway is part of a complete overhaul of Liberty Tower that has seen workers replace all the windows on floors four through 17, place an architectural cap on top of the building, modernize the elevators, install new heating and air-conditioning systems and add green features such as closed-loop piping and web-based energy management software.

Owners: Berry & Hunt.
