McGowan joins local law firm

Benjamin L. McGowan has joined the law firm of Summers & Wyatt.

McGowan joins the seven-attorney organization after working as an assistant public defender and counsel to the firm of Cavett and Abbott.

He will primarily work in the firm's criminal law defense and complex civil litigation division.

He is licensed in Tennessee, Massachusetts and New York and a graduate of the Northeastern School of Law.

"Ben has an extensive record of handling trials and appellate matters in many parts of both the civil and criminal areas of our legal system," said attorney Jerry H. Summers.


Erlanger Bledsoe adds OB specialists

Dr. Jeanie Dassow and Dr. Theodore Tsaltas have been added to the University of Tennessee Erlanger Women's Health Specialists office in Pikeville, Tenn.

Dassow and Tsaltas are both graduates from Washington University Medical School. Dassow is a specialist in pediatric and adolescent gynecology along with premenopausal syndrome and menopause.

Tsaltas specializes in minimally invasive surgery, abnormal uterine bleeding, sonography, pre-term labor, fetal and maternal physiology and other gynecological conditions.

Their new office is at the Erlanger Bledsoe Campus on 121 Wheelertown Ave.


Barge, Waggoner execs graduate

Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon executives from Chattanooga have graduated from Lipscomb University's customized leadership institute.

The graduates are Matthew Stovall, office manager in Chattanooga, and Russell Moorehead, senior project engineer in Chattanooga.

Lipscomb's College of Business School of Executive Education recently graduated the first class from its institute program. In August, 33 key leaders of BWSC, an engineering and architecture services firm with nine offices in three states, graduated from the 18-month leadership training program.

"Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon is interested in building the whole professional," said Bob Higgins, CEO of BWSC.


Miller & Martin marks 145th year

Miller & Martin PLLC is celebrating its 145th anniversary and Burkett Miller's philanthropic contributions to education.

Founded in 1867 by T. M. Burkett, Miller & Martin PLLC has grown to serve many of Chattanooga's leading companies in the Coca-Cola bottling, insurance, banking, manufacturing and service industries and now represents clients regionally and nationally through its office in Chattanooga and offices in Atlanta and Nashville.

Last week, the firm held a reception in Miller Plaza, which was donated by Burkett Miller, to recognize and present gifts to three educational programs founded by Miller and the Tonya Foundation, which he established.

The programs are the Miller Center for Public Affairs at the University of Virginia, the Tonya Public Affairs & Economics Internship Programs at the University of the South and the Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.


First black woman in space to speak

The Chattanooga Women's Leadership Institute will hear Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space, as the keynote speaker for the eighth annual leadership address Feb. 28, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

A woman who has spent her life dedicated to science, Jemison was a NASA astronaut for six years.

In September 1992, she served as the science mission specialist while on board the space shuttle Endeavour. Her duties while in space included performing experiments in material science, life science and human adaptation in weightlessness.


Lamp Post Group selects Falco

Joseph Falco has been picked as director of finance for the Lamp Post Group.

He holds an accounting degree from Barry University and an MBA from Florida International University, and he obtained his CPA license in 1993.

His professional career began in 1988 as an auditor with Coopers & Lybrand in Miami. In 1991 he joined Costa Cruise Lines as an assistant controller. In 1994, he was promoted to chief financial officer of Costa and remained in that position until 2006, when he became vice president of sales development. In 2007, he headed sales and marketing for Gulfstream Development Group, a developer that produced turnkey residential real estate investments.

Farr to address attorneys

Decosimo's Shannon Farr will co-present "Life Cycle of a Physician Practice" at the 12th annual Health Law Primer on Wednesday.

The health law event is hosted by the Tennessee Bar Association.

The session will provide insights regarding who may employ physicians, formation of physician-owned entities, issues in employment contracts, compensation models, becoming a shareholder in a practice and post-termination issues such as non-competes, medical records issues and notices to patients.

Farr is a certified public accountant accredited in business valuation and certified in financial forensics, and she specializes in business valuation and litigation support services, with a focus on the health care industry.


Smith heads safety at Hutton

Chattanooga-based Hutton Co. and Hutton Construction Inc. have promoted Todd Smith to the position of corporate safety director.

He currently is a construction project manager for Hutton Construction and will continue those responsibilities while also overseeing the company's safety program.

Bob Elliott, vice president of Hutton Construction, said Smith has been with the company for two years and "in that time has proven his leadership and skill sets, making him very deserving of this promotion."

He is a graduate of McCallie School and the University of Georgia and has been in the commercial, retail construction industry for seven years.

Belle Rive Boutique features a collection of local merchandise, fair trade goods, favorite boutique lines, and European antiques.

Owner Cindy Jayne opened the business after retiring from a career as an elementary school teacher.
