Under Construction: Cabela's store to bring outdoors in

photo The new 70,000-square-foot Cabela's in Fort Oglethorpe is expected to open in May 2015.

Project: Cabela's hunting, fishing and outdoor gear store.

Location: Along Interstate 75 just north of State Route 146 behind Costco in Fort Oglethorpe.

General contractor: EMJ Corp. of Chattanooga.

Size: 70,000 square feet.

Developer: Larry Armour.

Schedule: Store should be ready by July 2015.

Owner: Cabela's Inc., based in Sidney, Neb., bills itself as the world's foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing and other sports gear. Founded in 1961, Cabela's became a publicly traded company in 2004 and recently added its 55th store in the Atlanta suburb of Acworth, Ga., just 80 miles south of where the new Fort Oglethorpe store being built.

Store layout: Cabela's has a distinctive look to its retail operations, which makes some stores kind of a tourist attraction. The cavernous showroom is designed to bring the outdoors inside by featuring museum-quality displays of taxidermied wildlife, large aquariums, indoor mountains and archery ranges.

Future plans: The Fort Oglethorpe store is one of nine stores Cabela's plans to open in 2015 and one of three Cabela's that EMJ has already or plans to build. Cabela's has announced plans to nearly double the number of its current retail locations within the next four years.

Quote: "This store will allow us to better serve the thousands of outdoorsmen and women who live the Cabela's lifestyle across the region," Cabela's CEO Thomas L. Millner said.
