Work is underway on the new Harvest Grocery on Hixson Pike at Adams Road near Northgate Mall.

Project: Harvest Grocery.

Location: 5400 block of Hixson Pike, Chattanooga.

Owner/Contractor: McClure Construction Co., Chattanooga.

Size: 30,000 square feet, with additional space for smaller stores.

Investment: Around $5.5 million.

Architect: Neuhoff Taylor Architects, Chattanooga.

Engineer: March Adams & Associates Inc., Chattanooga.

History: Harvest Grocery is located in a rehabilitated Bi-Lo store. Bi-Lo occupied the space for several years before moving to a new store nearby in the mid-2000s. The building was empty for nearly a decade before remodeling began.

Scope: Harvest Grocery will employ 80 to 100 part- and full-time workers and sell locally grown products from area vendors. A former GreenLife owner is a consultant. Tim McClure, owner of McClure Construction and Harvest Grocery, said his intention is to offer more locally grown foods to Hixson. A developer and builder for 30 years, McClure said he wanted to try something different and believes the community will benefit. Harvest Grocery will carry products that national big box stores don't, including a private, company-owned line of goods. McClure compared it to Trader Joe's, where customers can find things not available at other brick-and-mortars.

Other tenants: The complex has four smaller retail spaces available, ranging from 1,500 to 1,600 square feet.

Schedule: Opening is set for the last week of April or the first week of May.
