It's been several years since I updated the goodies available for those 50 and older who have AARP memberships. AARP provides lots of discounted goods and services -- an incredible bang for your buck. I whip out my card for most any purchase because more merchants than ever offer discounts. For a complete inventory of benefits, go to AARP.org/benefitsguide25 or call 866-654-5725. Here's a sampling.

Tax tip

Whether health insurance costs too much or you're opposed for political, social or religious reasons, you're allowed to apply for an exemption from health care coverage. Go online to irs.gov and search "ACA Exemptions," particularly if you experienced financial hardship, had a gap in coverage fewer than three consecutive months last year, or if you're not a U.S. citizen.

Auto

Check the AARP Buying Program to see what others have paid for the vehicle you want. Not only does the program offer upfront dealer pricing, but you can choose the dealer you want before leaving home.

Members may be eligible for an auto-insurance discount by taking the Smart Driver Course that AARP provides at a discounted rate. Take it in a classroom or online.

Sears Auto Center gives seniors discounts on oil changes Tuesday through Thursday and discounts every day on RoadHandler and DieHard products.

Entertainment, gifts

Take in a movie you've been dying to see when it shows up at a Regal Theatre. You'll pay $8 for Regal ePremiere tickets when you purchase online and meet certain conditions. Plus, save $3 on any size popcorn and soft drink combo when you show AARP and Regal Crown Club cards (free for the asking).

Use your AARP card at Babies "R" Us/Toys "R" Us to save $5 on any $25 purchase Monday through Thursday.

If you love gift baskets, 1-800-Baskets.com, 1-800-Flowers.com and the Popcorn Factory offer a 20 percent online discount or $20 off purchases of $79.99. For a sweet tooth, Fannie Mae Fine Chocolates offers 15 percent in retail spots. (Certain exclusions apply.)

Health and wellness

AARP's Caregiving Resource Center provides the tools and support needed to help a loved one live independently.

Membership in AARP saves 10 percent or more on Petplan pet insurance, which can be used at any licensed vet in the United States and Canada, and gives you a $35 prepaid Visa card to help cover wellness expenses for FiFi or Rover. You be reimbursed for 80-pecent to 100-percent of vet bills for injuries or illnesses.

AARP membership gives exclusive points valid at Walgreens nationwide and at walgreens.com.

Home

ADT Home Security allows new (AARP) customers to deduct $2 from their monthly bill. The installation fee takes off 20 percent on any new system. (If you're already an ADT customer, it never hurts to call and try to obtain some future savings.)

UPS gives its AARP customers a 15 percent discount on eligible products and 5 percent on both domestic and international shipping services.

Family Dollar and Fred's Super Dollar stores provide instant savings on grocery, household, and health and beauty items. Just swipe your AARP card when paying.
