Williams Street warehouse sells for $1.87 million

A historic downtown Chattanooga loft warehouse at 1401 Williams St. that's been home to Southside Antiques for 21 years sold at auction Thursday for $1.87 million, said Henry Glascock, the real estate professional who conducted the auction.

The buyer is Steve Couch, who doesn't have any immediate plans to make changes at the two-story building, Glascock said. Along with the antique shop, the warehouse has a number of small offices whose tenants include painter Brett Weaver and The Center for Contemplative Writing.

"We had about 60 people at the auction, and we have four different groups that were interested," Glascock said of the auction that started with a $1 million bid and lasted for about 30 minutes.

The building's longtime owners sold, Glascock said, because of health reasons and dissolution of their partnership.

ORNL researchers receive awards

Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have received seven R&D 100 Awards in recognition of their significant advancements in science and technology.

The honorees were recognized on Nov. 3 at the 54th annual R&D 100 Conference, sponsored by R&D Magazine.

The awards, known as the "Oscars of Invention," honor innovative breakthroughs in materials science, biomedicine, consumer products and more from academia, industry and government-sponsored research agencies.

This year's seven honors bring ORNL's total of R&D 100 awards to 200 since their inception in 1963.
