More parking is under construction at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport. The $1.1 million lot off Airport Road is slated to add 230 more spaces.

Project: New Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport parking lot

Size: 230 parking spaces; the parking lot will be paved, fenced and lit at night, according to airport officials.

Location: Airport Road across from the Greyhound bus station

Construction cost: $1.1 million; security cameras will be installed at the unmanned lot, which will be served by a free shuttle, seven-days a week.

General Contractor: Dillard Construction

Completion date: Oct. 5

Total airport parking spaces after construction: Nearly 2,000

Need: Passenger boardings at the Chattanooga Airport are on the ascent again this year and may jet past 400,000 for the first time ever. United Airlines recently added new nonstop flights between Chattanooga and the New York City area and Chicago. United, re-entering the Chattanooga market after many years, started two-a-day flights into Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to service nearby New York City. Also, the airline is flying twice daily between Chattanooga and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

Future: There's room for another 513 spaces on the Airport Road land. If airport officials decide to build Lovell Field's first-ever parking structure, passengers could park in the Airport Road lot during construction of a deck near the terminal, officials have said.
