The Guerry family has been an integral part of Chattem and its predecessor, Chattanooga Medicine Co., for years, according to newspaper archives and company history.
Alex Guerry joined the company in 1945 and succeeded his uncle, Lupton Patten, as president in 1958 upon the death of Mr. Patten.
Mr. Guerry was a grandson of John A. Patten, a leader of the company until his death in 1916, and was a son of Charlotte Patten Guerry, the wife of Chattanooga educator Dr. Alexander Guerry and daughter of John A. Patten.
Alex Guerry led the company through rapid growth and its adoption of the Chattem name until his death in 1990 when he was succeeded by his son, Zan Guerry, current CEO.
