Janco Vending offers healthy choices, cashless purchases

* Name: Janco Vending

* Location: 314 Spears Ave. The company has moved three times in the last four years.

* Products/services: Janco Vending's primary business is full-service vending, with a focus on healthy snacks. The company provides the machines, usually at no cost, and stocks the machines for free, said Paul Stone, president of the company.

* Age: The Chattanooga-based company was founded in 1946, and was named for the founder's wife, Jan, according to Mr. Stone, who bought the company in 2006. The company has five employees.

* Target market: Janco continues to go after large locations with high-foot traffic. The company specifically is targeting manufacturing plants, which often have multiple shifts of employees working in the same building, using the same breakroom.

* Biggest hurdle: Renovating and updating the company's equipment was the hardest and most expensive task. Some of the equipment was older and prone to breakage, and making use of new technology was his first priority.

* Biggest reward: Mr. Stone loves to hear from customers that he's doing a good job, meaning that his machines are cleaned, filled and working.

* Challenges in the future: The single biggest challenge for vending businesses is rising prices across the board, from the cost of fuel to the wholesale price of a candy bar.

* Lesson learned: Not every location is meant to have vending machines, he said, adding that he started out with the impression that he could put equipment everywhere and make it viable.

* Five-year goal: Janco wants to be a strong and profitable company that offers exceptional service and takes advantage of technology such as cashless vending.
