Read House steakhouse closing during renovation

Customers of Porter's Steakhouse will soon have to wait to satisfy their cravings there as the restaurant undergoes a renovation.

The restaurant in the landmark downtown Sheraton Read House will close Monday to undergo the update that is set to be completed July 1.

"There will be a fabulous new look with contemporary furnishings, flooring, window treatments, enhancements to the lounge area as well as additions to Porter's already legendary menu," said Paul M. Mezik, general manager of The Sheraton Read House Hotel.

Trevor Goulding, director of sales, said the new look will create a comfortable atmosphere that will help improve one's dining experience.

"Porter's has become a Chattanooga landmark and has been the market leader from the time it opened," Mr. Goulding said. "This investment is not only a business decision, but a way to say thank you to Chattanooga for all of the support." Porter's became a part of the downtown hotel in 2004 as part of an $11 million renovation of the Read House.

And one industry official said it's important for restaurants to occasionally update.

"From time to time from a restaurant perspective, it's really important to update your furniture, fixtures and equipment," Tom Negri of the Tennessee Hospitality Association said. "You want to keep the interest in your facility up and continue to satisfy your clientele."

During the closure, Read House patrons can receive food and beverage service through a temporary dining area, room service and Starbucks, according to the Web site.
