The Chattanooga Theatre Centre offers summer academies in an actual theatre. Designed for rising kindergarteners through high school, classes are conducted in one- to three-week units in half- and full-day sessions June 4 - Aug. 3. Instruction in acting, dance, creative play, improvisation, comedy and more are offered for beginners to accomplished artists. Many classes mount productions at the end of the session. After-care is also available. Back this summer: a three-week Performance Training: Musical Theatre Academy for grades 4 - 12. Summer Academies improve confidence, enhance team-building skills and teach cooperation while instilling an appreciation for the arts in participants that can last a lifetime.

Rising Kindergarten through 1st grades

Creative Play

Our classes for young children are designed to build on their active imaginations while guiding them towards an understanding of how to portray characters in a story. In class, we play age-appropriate theatre games, use our bodies to create animals and other characters, hear stories and act them out. The week culminates in a short presentation.

Stories to Stage

Each week we'll explore different kinds of stories, based on a weekly theme, and make a play out of them. Each week culminates in a short performance.

June 4-8, The Lion's Kingdom

The lions may sleep tonight, but when they wake, there's excitement and adventure awaiting them.

June 11-15, Fairies, Elves & Dwarves

Stories about these legendary creatures are filled with magic and mystery. We'll bring that magic to life!

June 18-22, At the Circus

There are a hundred and one stories about the animals and people of the Big Top.

June 25-29, Island Stories

The people of the islands live between the land and the water. We will tell their stories.

July 9-13, Once Upon a Time

The best stories happen Once Upon a Time.

July 16-20, Train Stories

Engines, cars and caboose! We'll act out stories about adventure and travel on the "Iron Horse."

July 23-27, Under the Moon

Many amazing stories happen with the sun goes down and the moon rises high.

July 30-August 3, Princess Potpourri

When you take the most famous princesses in fairytale land and put them together, the result is a great story.

August 6-10, The Bear Went Over the Mountain

Oh, the bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. What did he see? That's what the story is all about.

This course covers the basics of acting, movement for the stage, vocal expression and mental preparation, to help the young actor develop his talent to the fullest. This workshop is a must for the serious actor.

Character through Improv

One week, June 11-15

Characterization is the foundation of all good acting. This session uses improvisation, physical, mental and emotional, to explore different characters and the process by which characters are created.

Creating Plays

Two weeks, June 18-29

The ultimate outcome of theatre is to create "the story well-told." This two-week workshop takes the participants through the process of developing, rehearsing and performing an original play. The end of this session culminates in a short performance.

Comedy

Play theatre games that will hone your skills at being creative on the spot, then use those skills to develop short comic sketches. There will be a presentation of work on the last day of class.

Performance Training Academy: Musical Theatre

This intensive, three week program gives students training in voice, movement, acting, and musical performance, while guiding them in the creation of an original musical, based on a classic story. If you love the theatre and want to know more about it, this is the one for you. Two performances on the last day of class.

Theatre Games

Five days of play with a purpose. Theatre games are used to teach the valuable skills of stage work such as team building, communication, focus and creativity.

Acting Through the Ages

This class is for young people with an interest in further studies in theatre. Students will learn various theatre and acting styles from around the world and through the ages such as Greek tragedy, Commedia del' arte, Kabuki and the 'isms' of theatre.

Classic Cinema

August 6-10

Every great movie director started as a great movie watcher. In order to hone the skills of a visual artist you must have a visual vocabulary from which you can draw new work. Much of our visual vocabulary is found in the cinema of the past hundred years. This class will involve the viewing and discussion of movies from the first fifty years of the film industry.
