Fort Oglethorpe trail network to receive new bridgework

Work on another component of the Old Post Greenway-Black Branch Trail should begin within the next few months.

Fort Oglethorpe City Council has approved $18,000 of engineering work the local office of Arcadis has done in connection with four bridges across Black Branch. These spans - two about 30, one at 50, the other about 90 feet in length - are needed to complete the trail between Gilbert-Stephenson and Gleason parks.

"We hope to have the bridges in place by June, and all work should be done by late fall," Public Works Director Jeff Long said.

The new bridgework should bring smiles to faces of walkers and joggers as the spans will fill in gaps that exist between the Walgreens on Battlefield Parkway and the former 6th Cavalry parade ground and polo field.

The council has approved expenditures of about $547,000 for three portions of a paved pathway that will eventually link the Chickamauga Battlefield and Hutcheson Medical Center at Park City Road with Chickamauga Creek near Walmart on Battlefield Parkway.

While work to revamp water mains in the area of Shelby Street, Forrest Road, Oak Circle, Lee Circle, Gracie Avenue and Eaton Circle should be completed before March, trail building in that area will continue through the remainder of 2011, Long said.
