The Catoosa County Library is expanding its summer reading program offerings to all ages, according to library director Bridgid Broderick.
"One World, Many Stories" is the theme for this year's toddler through elementary aged children's program and will feature children's literature from a global range of cultures, people and places. The program for teens is themed "You Are Here" and will cover similar topics using juvenile and young-adult literature.
Broderick said the summer reading program takes place the entire month of June and that teens and youngsters can begin picking up their age-appropriate program packets toward the end of May.
In a move to attract adults to the library - and to make the summer reading program a family affair - there will also be an adult summer reading program that complements the children's and teen programs.
"Not everyone can travel to 'novel' destinations, but through the library, customers can travel anywhere this summer," Broderick said. "Dream locations, exotic locales, exploring other countries and cultures, mysteries set in other countries, novels in translation - our adult program will center around a global travel theme."
Broderick said this worldwide theme will be incorporated into programming and weekly displays that include printed books, audio books, videos, DVD's and music. Customers will be invited to "review" and rate this material on pre-printed forms, and enter for chances to win theme-related incentive prizes.
One program is already scheduled on Thursday, June 3, at 6 p.m. when Marsha Mathews, a Dalton State College writing instructor, will read from her new book of poetry, "Northbound Single-Lane." Mathews will also discuss her experiences as a writer, followed by a book signing.
"I hope to offer some more adult programming on this theme in June...possibly incorporating dance, music, film and food," Broderick said. "No other programs have been confirmed at this time, but readers are invited to visit our website for more information as it becomes available."
