Little Women: Classic musical at Chattanooga State

The Chattanooga State Theatre and Music departments will present the Tony Award-winning musical "Little Women" during a three-performance run this weekend.

The play is adapted from the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott that tells the inspirational story of four sisters (Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy) and their mother (Marmee). They must adjust to life without their father and husband, who is away during the Civil War.

The semi-autobiographical book was first published in 1868. For the Broadway musical, the book was adapted by Allan Knee with music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein.

"Because it was one of my favorite books as a child, I have enjoyed researching and directing this adaptation," said director Sherry Landrum. "The musical version of 'Little Women' is a compelling and accurate depiction of this famous classic. 'Little Women' devotees will not be disappointed."

Brenda Schwab, resident costumer at Chattanooga State, has designed and constructed authentic reproductions of clothing from the Civil War era. The set, designed by Garry Lee Posey, depicts the architectural feeling of the period - the living room and attic of the sisters' home. Darrin Hassevoort, musical director, conducts the 14-piece orchestra.

The cast, featuring students, graduates or staff of the Professional Actor Training Program, includes Emily Dixon, Amy Henricks, Caleb Hicks, Sydney Hooper, Karley Moon, Roman Penney, Eric Phillips, Ellen Poole, Morgan Robbins, Brenda Schwab and Jeremy Wilkins. Lindsay Fussell is the choreographer.

The content is enjoyable for adults and children who are at least middle-school-age.
