Chattanooga Now Art workshops start Tuesday for new 'BC and Me' fundraiser

The MaryEllen Locher Foundation is seeking artists for a new fundraiser. "BC and Me," scheduled Sept. 22, is an art show and sale that will feature mixed-media collages created by breast cancer patients, survivors and their family and friends.

"Participants do not have to be trained artists to create works for this event," said Cindy Pare, administrator for the foundation. "Developing a collage will be a way to express hope for anyone who has been touched by breast cancer, including the patient, their family members who walk through it with them and their circle of friends."

A series of workshops is scheduled to assist participants in creating their collages. Workshops will be held at Art Warehouse, 3260 Brainerd Road, on these dates: Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.; Aug. 25 at 2 p.m.; Aug. 28 at 6:30 p.m.; Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m.; and Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. Registration is required for participation.

A $5 materials fee will be charged for family members and friends. Breast cancer patients and survivors will participate at no charge. Materials will be available to use in creating collages. Participants are encouraged to bring photos, mementos, letters, cards or other items to use.

The MaryEllen Locher Foundation, founded in 2002 by the WTVC news anchor and health reporter, is a national college scholarship program for children who have either lost a parent to breast cancer or have a parent who is a breast cancer survivor. Locher died in 2005 after her third bout with cancer. The foundation has awarded 255 scholarships totaling $474,000 since its inception.
