The Performing Arts Alliance of Rural Tennessee will present storyteller Bill Landry in two performances today at the Palace Theatre in Crossville.
Landry is the host/narrator and co-producer of "The Heartland Series," which airs on WBIR-TV in Knoxville. Since it began in 1984, the series that celebrates the people and land of the Appalachian region has produced more than 1,800 short features, including 150 half-hour episodes that air Saturdays as "Heartland Tonight."
During a 45-minute educational matinee at 12:30 p.m. CDT, Landry will guide the audience behind the scenes of "The Heartland Series" to show the ins and outs of filming the Emmy Award-winning program. He will show several short features and discuss with the audience how the stories came about, where the ideas came from and how they're put together.
The main performance, "An Evening With Bill Landry," begins at 7 p.m. CDT. Landry will start with the short "The Flower Hunter -- William Bartram, an Unlikely Explorer," the subject of the series pilot 27 years ago. He also will expound on stories featured in his book, "Appalachian Tales & Heartland Adventures," now in its third printing.
Landry has received two Emmy Awards for directing episodes of the series. The series has won numerous national and international honors, including five Emmy Awards and three Iris Awards from the National Association of Television Programming Executives.
