Shen Yun, a celebration of 5,000 years of Chinese history, will fill the stage with the color and energy of classical music and dance, in a performance Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Tivoli Theatre.

Characters ranging from brave generals to heavenly maidens, mischievous monks to a flying pig are featured in the show, which brings to life some of the legends, myths and literary tales of the ancient civilization.

In its eighth season, Shen Yun has performed in more than 100 cities around the world. Members of the troupe include dancers, musicians, singers, choreographers, composers, production crew and costume designers. Many of the performers have won international competitions in dance, choreography and music.

Though Shen Yun cannot be seen in China today, the nonprofit organization has become an international phenomenon. At its heart is Chinese dance. The physically demanding flips and spins are marked by a gentle elegance, making it one of the most rigorous and expressive art forms in the world.

The Shen Yun Orchestra is a combination of Eastern and Western influences. Ancient Chinese instruments such as the soul-stirring erhu and the delicate pipa lead the melody on top of a full orchestra of Western strings, percussion, woodwinds and brass to create a dramatic new sound.
