Chattanooga artist Charlie Newton will be at the opening reception of his "Shades" exhibition Friday, Jan. 13, at The Arts Center, 320 N. White St. in Athens, Tenn.

The reception is scheduled 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, preceding the "Sisters" concert at the venue at 7:30 p.m. Newton, who describes his art as "Southern African American Spiritual Painting," has 50 years of professional experience.

He has exhibited throughout the Southeast as well as England, Italy, New York and Miami, and his works hang in public and private collections all over the world.

He founded Splash, a nonprofit free art school for underprivileged at-risk youth in Chattanooga, in 2012.

"Shades" will remain on view through Friday, Feb. 17.
