"Winter Whites" isn't a fashion statement but the theme of the next make-and-take artwork participants at Painting for a Purpose will create.

Painting for a Purpose is a monthly adult painting party that doubles as a fundraiser for the 6th Cavalry Museum, dedicated to preserving the military history of the Fighting 6th Cavalry, which was stationed in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., from 1919 to 1942.

The first of this year's painting parties is Thursday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum, 6 Barnhardt Circle. Local artist Durinda Cheek, who is president of the museum, is the instructor. A $40 fee includes dinner and all supplies needed to make a 16- by 20-inch acrylic work of art. According to museum director Chris McKeever, about $2,000 was raised by last year's painting parties.

Each participant's canvas will be presketched. Cheek will demonstrate painting techniques and how to mix colors as well as give individualized instruction so all guests finish their paintings that night.

"I love doing snow scenes and will show the class how to apply 'splatter snow' using a toothbrush," Cheek says.

McKeever says the evening's menu will include heavy hors d'oeuvres of pickled shrimp, prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, phyllo pastries and desserts. Painters are encouraged to bring the adult beverage of their choice and an apron or old shirt to protect their clothes.

Registration is required, and class size is limited to 20 participants. Register online at 6thcavalrymuseum.com. To receive a registration form by email, call 706-861-2860 or email chris@6thcavalrymuseum.com.
