River Gallery's April exhibit, "Ladies of the Open Press," will feature a quartet of female artists and their visions of printmaking, letterpress, photography and book art.

Juanita Tumelaire is director of The Open Press in Chattanooga. Her work is inspired by her travels and life experiences. She brings a series that tells the story of Mabel Spofford's grand tour of Europe in 1924.

Adriana Caloca, an apprentice of Tumelaire at Open Press, strives to touch the intuition and wisdom of generations of women before her in her work. Inspired by artisanal metalwork of Mexico, Caloca focuses on connecting with those ancient women through spiritual imagery and symbolism.

Michelle Kimbrell, also a Tumelaire apprentice at Open Press, creates a body of work as a tribute to her mother and journey in life. She includes photos taken by her mother and grandmother to produce embroidered photo transfers with patterns of circles and flowers as symbols of this journey.

North Carolina printmaker Jessica White grew up in Taiwan, where she learned to love storybooks and traditional crafts. White creates humorous and sincere messages through simple imagery.

She will demonstrate her printmaking process at River Gallery on Saturday, April 8, from 2 to 4 p.m.
