Two family events are scheduled at Hunter Museum of American Art this weekend inspired by the museum's current exhibit by Karen LaMonte, "Embodied Beauty."

In this exhibit, the glass artist uses the dress form as a metaphor for gender and the human body. The exhibit draws from two of LaMonte's series: Floating Word, developed from a residency in Japan, and Nocturnes, which draws on her interests in classical Greek and Roman figures. The female forms motivates viewers to consider the role clothing plays in society and its impact on women's lives.

» Thursday, Aug. 16: Teen Night: Glass Dresses and Silver Screens, 6 p.m.

For teenagers only, this program will include a movie screening of summer students' films in partnership with the Creative Discovery Museum. Teens will look at fashion through LaMonte's sculptures.

"This is really just for teens and parents are welcome to drop them off," says Cara McGowan, Hunter director of marketing and communications.

The program is free for teens; Clumpies Ice Cream Co. will sell cold treats.

» Sunday, Aug. 19: "Family Fun Day: Dressed in Glass," 2-4 p.m.

Families are invited to sculpt something, mold something or make something from the variety of activities inspired by "Embodied Beauty." Children can create a miniature origami dress, observe a traditional tea ceremony, create a metallic sculpture and take part in a scavenger hunt through the galleries.

Chattanooga Ballet will join in the fun with a 2:30 p.m. performance inspired by the exhibit. The dance company's new dances are choreographed by Andrew Parker, artistic director.

Family Fun Day is free to ages 17 and younger and for Hunter members; $15 nonmember adults. Admission allows access to all permanent and temporary exhibits.
