Mother's Day buffet

Country Place also offers weekday lunch deals

Today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Country Place Restaurant invites families to bring their mothers and grandmothers to the family-owned and operated restaurant for a buffet full of home-cooked recipes that Mom didn't have to cook and won't have to clean up after.

"Whether your mother or grandmother lives at the end of a country lane or on a brick-lined street in town, you're sure to have sweet memories of Sunday dinner at her home - we surely do," says Sharon Trussell, who manages the restaurant with her husband Mike and son Jeremy. "What better way to bring back those memories or spend time with her than enjoying yummy food! Show mom love with a home-cooked meal she would cook for you but doesn't have to."

The Trussells have hosted their Mother's Day buffet for more than 30 years and say they see many of their regular customers come back year after year to enjoy the feast with family.

The special buffet costs $11.95 per diner and includes access to a long line of Southern-style favorites such as fried chicken, baked ham, tender roast beef and Granny's oven-baked boneless chicken. A huge selection of sides like broccoli casserole and steamed squash as well as a variety of delicious house-made desserts such as carrot cake and strawberry shortcake will be available. The buffet will also feature a full salad bar.

"We'll have a buffet selection fit for a queen," says Trussell. "And of course it wouldn't be a dinner like you were at grandma's without a delicious homemade dessert selection. Our lemon ice box pie and banana pudding are famous."

Groups of five or more should make reservations, she warns. If a mother chooses not to eat the buffet, they will get a free dessert with any meal they order from the kitchen.

Country Place regularly features lunch specials Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $6.75.

The lunch entrées now include a chef salad with soup on Monday, home-style chicken pot pie with one vegetable on Tuesday, Mama's meatloaf with two vegetables on Wednesday, chicken and dumplings with two vegetables on Thursday and a country burger platter on Friday. One of the most popular sides at the moment is a serving of the restaurant's fried green tomatoes, according to Trussell.

The Family Feast is still available on Sundays for $20.12 plus tax and is prepared with a serving of 12 jumbo chicken tenders, three large bowls of vegetables and a serving of rolls, cornbread or biscuits.

Mike Trussell says the chicken tenders are the biggest that can be bought at the market - twice the size of normal chicken tenders - and are hand-breaded. The Family Feast is available for dine-in or carryout.

"I don't think people realized the value of it until they ordered it and then they would come back for more," Mike Trussell says.
