On Tap Winter 2013

Prost, na zdravi, salud and cheers!

No matter how you say it, there's a lot to celebrate and enjoy when it comes to the craft beer scene in Chattanooga. Just ask Tony Gianassi, Chattanooga's only Level Two Certified Cicerone and Craft Beer Manager for Carter Distributing.

"In 2005 the Southern Brewer's Festival was the only way to try new beers," Gianassi says. "In the past four to five years, craft beer has really taken hold and exploded. In 2005 we had one craft brewer, and now we have five breweries - that's huge."

Along with the addition of new beer festivals like Beer Over Dirt and Chattanooga Craft Beer Festival, approximately 100 new craft beers hit the Chattanooga market this year alone.

"I don't think any other year we've had as much new craft beer here, and it's not stopping," says Gianassi.

So if you're new to craft beer or looking to try something different, there's no better time than

the present. "Go to a local craft beer spot in town. Let them pour you a sample," Gianassi advises. "If you like it, let them pour you some more. If you don't like it, let them pour you something else. Find out what you like even if it takes tasting a lot of beer to get there."

Whether you're more interested in filling up your own growler and drinking at home or with friends, pairing craft beer with your favorite dish from a local restaurant or getting it from the source at one of Chattanooga's five local breweries, the options are endless. The key is just to start somewhere and not be afraid to ask questions, says Gianassi.

"Keep trying new things but support your favorites," he says. "Try local first. The beer is fresher and they know what Chattanooga likes."
