Kumo now serves beer, sake

Restaurant's sushi chefs offer catering for parties

Kumo Hibachi Sushi is now offering guests a selection of beer along with hot and cold sake to enjoy with their favorite hibachi-style entrées and fresh sushi dishes.

"So many people ask for alcoholic beverages and that's why we applied for the wine license," says manager Ivy Zhang. "It's taken many months, but it has been approved. Now people can come and enjoy some sake with their meal."

For lunch and dinner, Kumo offers hibachi-style entrées that include everything from traditional teriyaki chicken to filet mignon served with sides like fried rice or lo mien noodles, soups and salads. For those looking for some seafood, Kumo features lobster in an entrée size portion or as an addition. Lobster tail can be added to a combination platter with steak, chicken or shrimp for $17.95, and for $18.95 guests can pair lobster and the restaurant's filet mignon.

Sushi at Kumo is also a popular choice. Guests can experience a delicious variety of specialty rolls along with traditional nigiri and sashimi. Every week the restaurant features specialty rolls on the blackboard, including new creations like the Crystal Roll with lobster salad, mango, avocado and crunchies all wrapped in rice paper and served with the chef's special sauce. The Sunny Roll is prepared with crabmeat, tuna, avocado, cucumber and cream cheese wrapped with soy paper and served with the chef's special sauce.

Guests don't have to choose between hibachi and sushi; they can enjoy both. Kumo features a dinner special for two for $19.99. A couple can pick two hibachi meals, a regular sushi roll and two spring rolls, all of which are served with two soups and two salads. The deluxe special for two is also popular. Priced at $26.99, it includes two hibachi meals, a specialty roll, four spring rolls, two soups and two salads.

"The price and quality are the best parts of the meal here," Zhang says. Guests who don't have time to dine in are welcome to order their favorite entrées to go for either lunch or dinner. For lunch, the restaurant features a bento box with teriyaki chicken, a spring roll and a California roll starting at $8 with soup or salad. The bento boxes are popular for office workers who only have a few minutes to grab their lunch and get back to the office, says Zhang.

"We can also cater for sushi parties," she says. "Our chefs can go out and make the sushi for their party. We can bring the fish in the case."

Kumo's two sushi chefs have at least 10 years of experience and worked for years in New York City before coming to Chattanooga. They often hosted private sushi parties where the guests can request their favorite rolls and nigiri and watch as their personal chef creates it. The sushi parties can also be a fun option for companies that want to host a catered sushi luncheon or celebration.
