West End play 'The Audience' at Majestic 12 (June 13)

A play touted by British newspaper The Daily Mail as "one of the theatrical highlights of 2013" will be shown today, June 13, on the big screen at Majestic 12 as part of Carmike Cinemas' National Theatre Live.

"The Audience," a West End production, reunites "The Queen" writer Peter Morgan and actress Helen Mirren, who reprises her Academy Award-winning role as Queen Elizabeth II.

The production examines the 60-year tradition of Queen Elizabeth meeting England's prime ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said, not even to their spouses.

"The Audience" breaks this contract of silence and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their queen. There have been 12 during her reign, and from Churchill to Cameron, each has used these private conversations as a sounding board and confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive.

The meetings also chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next prime minister.

The play is directed by Academy Award nominee Stephen Daldry ("Billy Elliot," "The Hours").

The three-hour production starts at 7 p.m. All seats are $23.
