King penguins crowding Salisbury Plain can be seen in "Penguins 3D," now playing at the Tennessee
Aquarium's Imax Theater.Two films opening Friday, Nov. 29, at the Tennessee Aquarium's Imax Theater will take viewers to opposite ends of the globe.
"The Polar Express 3D" is the 2004 holiday classic about a train ride to the North Pole. "Penguins 3D" tells the story of a king penguin on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia.
"THE POLAR EXPRESS 3D"
This one airs on television each holiday season and is likely on your DVD shelf, but the six-story Imax screen and the digital wraparound sound add to the moviegoing experience.
The story - about a doubting young boy who makes an extraordinary journey of self-discovery on his way to find Santa - is based on the Caldecott Medal-winning book by Chris Van Allsburg. Robert Zemeckis directed the film, and Tom Hanks starred.
The PG-rated film has a running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.
"PENGUINS 3D"
In this 2012 documentary, a young king penguin returns to his birthplace to search for a mate in a colony of nearly 1 million identical-looking birds. According to a recent paper published in Antarctic Science, there are 450,000 breeding pairs of king penguins on this relatively small island.
Sir David Attenborough, the film's writer and narrator, says audiences will be astounded at how chicks and parents can recognize individual vocalizations among an almost deafening cacophony of raucous calling, as well as the unique habitat of the island.
The film is rated G with a running time of 40 minutes.
