Next Fathom events run the gamut from opera to comedy riffs

First-run films aren't the only offerings coming up at East Ridge 18 and Hamilton Place 8.

In the next few days, both cinemas also will host a handful of big-screen special events, including a Christmas cult classic, a Broadway production, an opera and an animated film for adults.

* Today, Dec. 1: RiffTrax holiday special double feature: "Santa Conquers the Martians" and "Christmas Shorts-stravaganza," 7 p.m., East Ridge 18 and Hamilton Place 8.

This rebroadcast of favorite RiffTrax holiday classics - films accompanied by funny commentary - features a special guest appearance by "Weird Al" Yankovic, plus the RiffTrax comedians - Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett - will riff on fan-submitted holiday photos.

"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" tells the story of an evil Martian who comes to Earth to capture Santa Claus and take him back to Mars. Yankovic joins the guys for the second feature, "Christmas Shorts-stravaganza," holiday-themed short films from the bizarre to the sublime.

* Today, Dec. 1: "She Loves Me," 7 p.m., East Ridge 18.

The big-screen premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical features exclusive interviews with the cast and creators. The Broadway revival from Studio 54 stars Laura Benanti and Zachary Levi as Amalia and Georg, two parfumerie clerks who spar on the job but who happen to be anonymous pen pals who are falling in love. The production was nominated for eight Tony Awards in this revival, winning for Best Scenic Design. The original Broadway run won a Tony Award (out of five nominations) in 1964, and the 1994 revival picked up another statue (out of nine nominations).

* Saturday, Dec. 3: "The Magic Flute," 12:55 p.m., East Ridge 18 and Hamilton Place 8.

This encore performance replays the groundbreaking broadcast that launched the Metropolitan Opera's Live in HD series in movie theaters in 2006. Opera lovers were enchanted by the whimsical humor and breathtaking puppetry in this Julie Taymor production of Mozart's timeless fairy tale, presented in a shortened English-language version.

* Tuesday, Dec. 6: "Nerdland," 8 p.m., East Ridge 18 and Hamilton Place 8.

Making its big-screen debut, this adult animated film stars Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt as slacker best friends who have seen their dreams of superstardom fizzle. With their 30th birthdays looming and desperation growing, they embark on a series of reckless publicity stunts and failed heroics to gain fame by any means, only to become household names when they become key witnesses in a high-profile crime.

The screening also features stand-up comedian Blaine Capatch moderating a discussion with Oswalt, co-stars Brendon Small, Kate Miccuci and John Ennis, director Chris Prynoski and writer/producer Andrew Kevin Walker.
