Carmichael in Chattanooga, Cleveland

Area residents have a chance to catch Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Judy Carmichael in two free concerts Sunday and Monday.

Described by The New York Times as "astounding, flawless and captivating," Carmichael is recognized as one of the world's leading interpreters of stride piano and swing. She has played a variety of venues around the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, and was the first jazz musician sponsored by the U.S. government to tour China.

Chattanooga: On Sunday, she will be the featured artist in the Sunday With Steinway Concert Series, presented by Summitt Pianos, 6209 Lee Highway.

Admission is free, but reservations are required for the show, which is scheduled from 3 to 4:30 p.m. To RSVP, visit the Sunday With Steinway Facebook page or call Buddy Shirk at 499-0600.

Cleveland: On Monday, Cleveland State Community College will host Carmichael as the kickoff for its effort to become an all-Steinway school, a distinction held by only 135 institutions in the world.

The performance will start at 8 p.m. in the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center Theater, which is on the south side of the campus near the Technology Building (signs will be posted).

Admission is free, but seating is reserved. For availability, contact Tracey Wright, director of special programs and community relations, at 423-472-7141, ext. 341, or twright05@clevelandstatecc.edu.
