Signal Mountain swings to big-band music

Mountain Arts Community Center continues to expand its program offerings with a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday by the Uptown Big Band.

According to director Barb Storm, the MACC, once known primarily for art classes, is becoming "an eclectic performance venue."

"August brought a percussion ensemble and October a choir from Belarus," she said. Saturday's big-band concert "switches it up yet again."

The Uptown Big Band performs vocal and instrumental arrangements of the masters of the big-band era, including Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie, along with pieces by more modern composers such as Tom Kubis, Gorden Goodwin and Bill Liston.

Vocalists Michael Smith and Rebecca Mathis cover favorites from Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day, Natalie Cole and others.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door or in advance at the MACC office, 809 Kentucky Ave. For details, call 886-1959.
