The inaugural River City Winter Clarinet Festival, a one-day intensive for area musicians, will conclude Saturday with a concert by festival participants.

The event is presented by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Department of Music and the Chattanooga Clarinet Choir.

Dr. Richard Shanley, professor emeritus of clarinet and former coordinator of woodwinds at Baylor University, will be the guest artist and clinician. In addition to presenting a lecture on the role of harmony clarinets in the clarinet choir and other clarinet ensembles, Shanley will lead the festival choir during rehearsals and direct the afternoon concert.

The stylistically diverse program will consist of original compositions for clarinet choir as well as transcriptions of standard works from the choral, symphonic and chamber repertoire by such masters as Mozart, Bach, Corelli and Rimsky-Korsakov.

Participation in the festival was open to high school and college-age clarinet students, as well as amateur and professional clarinetists from the community.

"Response has been tremendous," said Dr. Nikolasa Tejero, director of the festival.

At the close of registration, more than 75 participants had registered from across Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Florida, according to organizers.
